Carpenter received a 24-hour Navitimer (called the Cosmonaute, meaning "astronaut" in French) from Breitling three days before his Mercury-Atlas 7 mission on May 24, 1962.In the Aurora 7 capsule Carpenter became the second American to orbit the Earth Omega Seamaster 300 M Chronometer and the fourth American into space. After Carpenter's capsule landed in the ocean, his watch sustained some water damage so he sent it back to Breitling for repair.Breitling, in return, sent him a new brand new watch.Unfortunately, after an extensive search Breitling has never been able to find Carpenter's space-bound watch, but the history was certainly not lost on the venerable independent brand.
The Breitling is visible on Carpenter's left wristIn 1997, to mark the 35thanniversary of Carpenter’s flight, Breitling introduced a limited edition of 1000 Omega Seamaster 300 M Chronometer Navitimer Cosmonaute watches with Scott Carpenter’s name on the dial, and that is exactly what we have found for you today. These watches are fairly uncommon, and few people outside of the Breitling fanboy or NASA-nut community even remember they were made, but we do, and the one we've found is for sale on JamesList for under $3500.Not bad at all.
